The Year 7 / 8 Learning Team strives to provide a supportive environment for early adolescent students, which enables them to develop their academic skills, key competencies and cultural abilities in preparation for secondary schooling and life beyond.

We have a focus on
- Inquiry learning – encouraging decision making and information literacy skills
- Numeracy – including integrated maths
- Literacy – reading for comprehension and understanding as well as speaking with confidence
- Integrating ICT into programmes where applicable
We offer
- Many musical opportunities – Orchestra, Senior Choir, Vocal Group, Jazz Band, School Production
- Technology at Hillmorton – textiles, woodwork, metalwork, home economics as well as additional classes in subjects such as computing, drama, visual art and science
- Hagley Sport – a weekly competition over winter
- EOTC – Taumutu Marae / Wainui / Sailing / Ski trip (every second year)
- K.I.C.K.I.T. – opportunities to experience a wide range of sports in the community
- Languages – introduction to either Spanish or Japanese
- A range of competition opportunities – Cantamath, Jump Jam, BP Technology Challenge, Blue Light(Police confidence competition), Kid’s Lit, Science Fair
- Extension classes using outside providers eg: Science Alive
- Young Writer’s Workshop
- Young Leaders’ Conference
- ICAS Competitions (Computers, Science, Writing, Spelling, English, Mathematics)
